Changing How We Look At Things

One of my favorite quotes comes from Wayne Dyer, a spiritual teacher I admired greatly but who no longer walks on Earth with us. He said, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

I have thought about this wisdom many times in my life, especially when I was feeling down or depressed about something. I have been able to turn situations completely around by taking this advice. Do I choose to focus on the negative in a situation or see the good that might come from it?

When I talk to people about yoga, they often tell me what they CANNOT do!

“Oh my goodness! I can’t touch my toes!”
“My knees don’t bend like that!”
“Standing on one leg is almost impossible!”
“I’ll never get into that posture!”

When we repeat those things to ourselves or affirm them out loud, they become our focus. How many times do we actually focus on what we CAN do because of our practice?

“I can get in and out of my car without hurting my back!”
“I can get up when I am sitting on the floor!”
“I’m strong enough to carry two bags of groceries on each arm!”
“I can easily reach the top shelf in my kitchen while balancing on my toes!”

I am sure your CAN list is much longer than your CAN’T list!

Thanks, Wayne.
